You wouldn't start a painting on a canvas if it wasn't in good condition, and it shouldn't be any different with your face before applying makeup.
Your face is the canvas for your makeup. Skin care is incredibly important in general but is also important to make sure your makeup looks flawless. With a good skin care routine you can assure the makeup sits on the skin smoothly, without irritation and lasts longer.
In this blog we will take about what each product does, the importance of skin care, which order you should apply your products and much more.
Your daytime and nighttime routines should be slightly different depending on your skin type and if you have any skin conditions but here is a basic skin care routine you can follow.
Step 1 - Cleanse
Cleansing is the first step of any good skincare routine. Cleansers are much better than makeup/ face wipes to clean your face from dirt and makeup. The type of cleanser you use matters more than you probably think. Gentle cleansers are your best friend, particularly if you plan on using more active ingredients down the line. The problem with using harsh cleansers is if you use them too often they can break down your skin barrier.
Side note: highly recommend to double cleanse, to make sure you skin is spotlessly clean before continuing with the skin care routine.
Step 2- Toner
This can be an optional step, but if you have a toner you like, there is no reason not to use it as toners can be a good way to balance the skin's pH. If you have acne-prone skin, you should look for a toner with ingredients like salicylic acid to calm breakouts. If you have dry or sensitive skin, go for a hydrating toner to soothe.
Step 3- Eye cream
Pop on eye cream using your ring finger (as its usually your weakest finger). Eye cream is the
best way to keep the eye area moisturised and to prevent wrinkles. It is better to by an eye cream rather than a normal moisturiser that you would use for the rest of your face as the eye area is incredibly thin and delicate so the normal moisturiser can be too rich and cause irritation or puffiness.
Step 4- Moisturise
After eye cream, the next step is to moisturise. Moisturiser keeps your skin hydrated and helps keep your skin barrier strong. For daytime use, go for a lighter moisturiser that will soak in quickly and won't cause "cakeyness" under makeup.
I would also invest in a good lip balm to keep your lips nice, plump and moisturised.
Step 5 - Suncream (use for morning routine only for obvious reasons)
This is the most important step in your skincare routine. If you don't wear suncream, it's like
you might as well not bother with the routine at all. The sun is the biggest reason why people's skin will age prematurely.
Protecting your skin from the sun is important even if you're spending your days indoors, as UV rays can still come in through the windows or if its cloudy.
